Tips for Saddle Pads A saddle pad is used to protect a horse's back during riding. It is usually thicker than a "saddle blanket" and often made of layers of felt, sheepskin, or other synthetic materials including gels. A saddle pad is designed to absorb shock and minimize back fatigue.While it is not a substitute for a well-fitting saddle, it can sometimes compensate for small fit differences such as the difference between a horse's weight in winter and summer.
