Overflow boxes are typically used to bring water from the main aquarium to the wet-dry filter or the sump. They consist of a "skimmer" box inside the tank (that has small slits to help prevent smaller fish from "overflowing" out of the tank and into the sump) and a larger box with hose attachments outside the tank. Water that rises above the level of the "skimmer" will "overflow" into the sump below, thus keeping the water level in the tank constant.

The surface of the water is constantly skimmed, removing undesirable film and enhancing gas exchange. Additionally, the water is aerated as the water falls over the overflow, down the drain and splashes into the sump.

A reef sump has important benefits to any aquarium.By using the sump to hold extra water, the volume of water in the system is increased. Evaporation from the tank itself is mitigated by the reserve in the sump, preventing the annoying need to constantly add water to the tank.

Additionally, larger water volume in saltwater systems makes the system more stable. The chemistry and temperature change on a day to day basis in a large volume of water is less by percentage than the same change to a smaller volume of water.

The sump is the ideal place to house equipment such as heaters, filters, skimmers, thermometers or any other equipment that detracts from the aesthetics of the tank.
